911: Nova Scotia's Emergency Telephone Reporting System

911Nova Scotia's 911 service is one of the key programs at EMO. This province-wide service is the first of its kind in Canada.

Nova Scotia's emergency call taking service, a partnership with Aliant, is unique in two respects: it is built on a fully integrated platform, which means that all four answering points are interconnected, and it is an industry leader when it comes to providing 911 service to cellular callers.

While the province maintains and administers the 911 system, we are not the employer. There are four 911 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP's) across the province; one run by the RCMP in Truro, one by Halifax Regional Municipality in Dartmouth, one by Cape Breton Regional Municipality in Sydney, and one in Kentville that is privately owned and operated.  Each centre screens, hires and compensates independently and as such any employment enquiries should be directed to the individual PSAP. Once a candidate is hired by one of these centres, and after a successful probationary period, the individual receives 911 training through EMO.
