The first step in the emergency management process is the prevention of situations that might cause an abnormal event. Taking steps to prevent emergencies conserves resources.

Families and Individuals can practice Prevention of emergencies by activities such as:

  • Properly storing household cleaners and chemical products
  • Ensuring children don’t play with matches or lighters
  • Maintaining property areas such as drainage areas or basement walls
  • Not traveling when storm conditions are predicted


REMO actions to Prevent Emergencies include activities such as:

  • Bylaws restricting open fires during dry seasons
  • Supporting highway maintenance to ensure road safety
  • Building dams and structures to divert or control water to prevent flooding
  • Land use zoning practices

911: Nova Scotia's Emergency Telephone Reporting System

Nova Scotia's 911 service is one of the key programs at EMO. This province-wide service is the first of its kind in Canada.
